A former vice governor of east China's Anhui Province, Ni Fake, stood trial on Monday for accepting bribes and holding huge property assets from unidentified sources.
Between 2000 and 2012, Ni accepted cash, gemstones and art works worth more than 13 million yuan (US$2.1 million) from the executives of nine companies on 49 occasions, said the indictment from the people's procuratorate in the city of Dongying.
In exchange, Ni took advantage of his post to seek benefits for these groups, which were involved in real estate, mining and other businesses. He was believed to provide the companies with help in project planning, house demolition and resettlement for land development, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors also accused Ni of possessing property worth over 5.8 million yuan whose sources were unexplained.
According to a statement released by the Dongying Intermediate People's Court after Monday's trial, prosecutors, Ni and his defending lawyers cross-examined related evidence at the hearing, and the two sides "fully expressed their opinions."
The court said it would announce the sentence at a later date.
More than 100 people, including Ni's relatives, lawmakers, political advisors, reporters and citizens from various walks of life, attended the hearing.
