Party kicks out 3 more officials

THE Communist Party of China has expelled three more senior officials in its ongoing crackdown on corruption.

The move, a step toward criminal prosecution, adds to a growing list of officials snared in the campaign launched by President Xi Jinping, who has warned that pervasive corruption is a threat to the ruling party’s very survival.

Those expelled yesterday include Ji Wenlin, a former deputy governor of the southern island province of Hainan, according to the website of the Party’s disciplinary watchdog. Ji had held a succession of central government posts before transferring to Hainan.

“Investigations show that Ji took advantage of his posts to seek benefits for others, demanded and received a huge amount of bribes, and committed adultery,” the Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in a statement.

The State Council approved a decision to dismiss Ji from public office, it said, adding that details of his alleged criminal behavior had been transferred to judicial agencies for further management.

Also expelled yesterday were Yu Gang, former deputy head of the general office of the Party’s Commission for Political and Legal Affairs, and Tan Hong, a former senior officer in the Ministry of Public Security’s guard bureau. The statement alleged that Yu and Tan also took “huge bribes” and that Yu had committed adultery.

Yu was stripped of his Party membership and official post for “serious violation of discipline and law,” the disciplinary watchdog said.

He was found to have taken advantage of his position to seek benefits for others, taken huge bribes and committed adultery.

His case has been transferred to prosecutors for suspected infringement of the law.

Tan was guilty of taking advantage of his post and status to seek benefits for others, extorting and receiving huge bribes, the watchdog said.

Party officials are supposed to be morally upstanding and can be punished for morality issues such as adultery in addition to any criminal behavior.
