China has put a vice minister of public security under investigation for serious violations of laws and regulations, the Party’s discipline watchdog said yesterday.
No details were given in the one-sentence announcement about Li Dongsheng, who was placed under investigation by the Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. The charge usually relates to corruption and abuse of power.
Li, 58, is a member of the Central Committee, a body of about 350 of the Party’s leading members. He is also vice head of a central leading group for the prevention and handling of cult-related issues.
Li spent 22 years working at state broadcaster China Central Television, rising to deputy head of the station. He then moved to the body overseeing film, television and radio, before becoming a vice minister of publicity in 2002.
The Party’s anti-graft watchdog said in November it would target all senior officials in its fight against corruption.
President Xi Jinping has pursued an aggressive anti-corruption drive since coming to power, vowing to pursue high-flying “tigers” as well as lowly “flies.”
A top official in China’s prosperous Guangdong Province is being investigated for “serious discipline violations.”
The official, Cao Jianliao, is vice mayor of Guangzhou, the provincial capital, and Party chief of Zengcheng, a built-up district on the southern fringes of Guangzhou, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Guangdong is one of China’s most affluent regions, encompassing the industrial and export powerhouse of the Pearl River Delta, which borders Hong Kong. It has been hit by a string of high-profile corruption cases in recent years.
A court in Guangdong yesterday sentenced a former political adviser in Shenzhen City to 14 years for bribery and holding illegal weapons, Xinhua reported.
Huang Zhiguang, former vice chairman of the Shenzhen Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, took bribes in exchange for promotions, the court said.
Huang also helped the president of a local company, surnamed Zhan, with his business from 2002 to 2010. In exchange, Zhan gave him valuable gifts, such as jade ornaments and luxurious furniture, Xinhua said.
Huang illegally possessed seven guns which were seized at his home on April 19, 2011 as part of an investigation into severe discipline violations.
Property worth 500,000 yuan (US$82,350), cash equal to bribes of over 800,000 yuan and the gifts have been confiscated.
In a separate report, Xinhua said a former deputy mayor of Jinhua in the prosperous eastern province of Zhejiang was jailed for life on Thursday for taking bribes.
It said Zhu Fulin received the bribes, including a car and bars of gold, in exchange for influencing decisions about land and real estate development, job promotions and environmental reports.
