Quake-tears official under investigation

A former vice governor of southwest China’s Sichuan Province is being investigated on suspicion of corruption.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said Li Chengyun is suspected of “severe disciplinary violations,” using its normal euphemism for corruption.

It gave no other details.

Li has spent his entire working life in Sichuan, his official biography says, where he was Party chief in Deyang when Zhou Yongkang was in charge of Sichuan.

Zhou, China’s former security chief, was jailed for life last year for accepting bribes.

Li was dismissed as deputy governor in 2011, also accused of discipline breaches, but two months later was appointed a vice director of a Sichuan policy planning panel.

According to media reports, Li is best known for shedding tears at a news conference in Beijing in 2008 after a devastating earthquake that killed almost 70,000 people.
