Sichuan’s ex-deputy chief admits all charges
李春城被控受贿、滥用职权案一审开庭审理
LI Chuncheng, former deputy Party chief of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, confessed to abusing his power and accepting bribes when he appeared in court yesterday.
Prosecutors told the Xianning Intermediate People’s Court in central China’s Hubei Province that between 1999 and 2012 Li had sought profits for others in land development and project contracts, and illegally accepted money and goods directly or through his wife when he was serving as vice mayor of Chengdu, Sichuan’s capital, Party chief of Luzhou, mayor of Chengdu, Party chief of Chengdu and vice Party chief of Sichuan.
The bribes he had taken during this period were worth almost 40 million yuan (US$6.4 million), they said.
Li was also accused of “offering interests to others” from 2001 to July 2011 when serving as mayor of Chengdu and Party chief of Chengdu, at the instigation of former security chief Zhou Yongkang, who was charged with bribery, abuse of power and disclosure of state secrets earlier this month.
Li’s corruption had caused great losses to public assets, prosecutors told the court.
The court said Li could be given a lenient sentence as he had confessed some of his crimes during the investigation and returned most of his illegal income.
In court yesterday Li said that the charges were true and he regretted his wrongdoing.
Li was put under disciplinary investigation in October 2012 and the China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate began its investigation in April 2014.
Prosecutors presented bank materials, accounting credentials, project contracts, pictures, witnesses’ testimonies and the defendant’s statement among other evidence.
Sentence will announced at a later date.
