CHEN Chuanping, former Party chief of Taiyuan City, capital of north China's Shanxi Province, stood trial on Tuesday for taking bribes and abuse of power.
Chen, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Shanxi Provincial Committee, was accused of taking advantage of his various official posts from 2008 to 2013 to seek benefits for four entities and individuals, including Taiyuan Iron and Steel (Group) Co. Ltd. (TISCO), in production, operations and personnel promotion.
Chen accepted bribes worth over 910,000 yuan (around US$136,437), either by himself or through his wife, according to the indictment from the People's Procuratorate of Xuzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province.
When he served as TISCO's chairman from May 2005 to November 2007, Chen abused his power to order a subcompany to engage in futures trading overseas, causing losses to state assets of more than 907 million yuan.
The procuratorate filed the charges with the Xuzhou Intermediate People's Court.
Chen confessed to taking bribes and abuse of power, and expressed remorse in court.
The court ruling will be announced at a later date.
More than 60 people, including Chen's relatives, journalists and members of the public, observed Tuesday's hearing.
