US urged to send fugitive official back to China
外交部敦促美方尽早遣返杨秀珠

THE United States is being urged to repatriate a fugitive ex-Chinese official at the earliest possible date.

Following the opening of the trial of Yang Xiuzhu in a New York immigration court on Tuesday, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters at a regular press briefing yesterday that Yang should be punished in China according to Chinese law.

Yang, former vice mayor of Wenzhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province, fled China with her family when investigators began looking into her activities in 2003. Investigators said they found evidence that she had accepted 253 million yuan (US$41 million) in bribes.

In April, China released a list of 100 economic fugitives as part of the country’s recent anti-corruption campaign. Yang is on the list.

Yang is accused of “violating the terms of the Visa Waiver Program” and the New York court is being asked to deport her to China.

Yang first fled to Singapore in 2003 before changing her name and flying to New York.

She was detained in Amsterdam in 2005, but China was not able to gain custody, despite protracted negotiations with the Netherlands.

China’s sweeping campaign against graft has been hampered by the difficulty in getting corrupt officials and assets back from overseas.

China does not have extradition treaties with the US or Canada — the two most popular destinations.
