XIAO Shaoxiang, the former vice curator of the Beijing Zoo, was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for corruption.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court ruled that Xiao, who was the head of Taoranting Park and vice curator of the Beijing Zoo between 2005 and 2012, embezzled public funds worth over 14 million yuan (US$2.29 million).

Xiao was pictured smiling during the hearing.

The court found Xiao guilty of taking bribes and owning properties. He could not account for the money.

Xiao pocketed funds that were earmarked for renovation projects for the zoo’s animal enclosures and Taoranting facilities. He also got kickbacks from construction companies, and embezzled money paid by a demolition company to the zoo.

Xiao was also found guilty of accepting 100,000 yuan in bribes to help a construction company win a bid.

Investigators found more than six million yuan in cash at Xiao’s apartment in Fangshan, a suburb in Beijing.

Xiao claimed he drove a taxi in the night to make extra money. He also said he borrowed 1 million yuan from relatives.
