iPhone 4S sold out swiftly, mostly to scalpers
THE newly released iPhone 4S went out of stock in Apple Stores hours after the long-waited smartphone made its debut in Shanghai and Beijing.
Hundreds of people, many of them scalpers, queued outside the stores from Thursday in order to get the latest gadget.
The Apple Store on Huaihai Road M. opened at 7am and sold out the device by 9:30am.
The store placed a sign to stop people from joining the waiting line, but there were still several hundred people gathering outside, mostly scalpers who want to resell the sets for a profit of 500-1,000 yuan each.
In a statement issued Friday, Apple said the demand for iPhone 4S was so high that its five official stores on the mainland had all run out of stock.
Since the smartphone won't be available in its official stores for now, it advised customers to order it online or buy it from China Unicom, its sole carrier in the domestic market, and other authorized retailers, the statement said.
A total of 500 people from Qidong, a city in neighboring Jiangsu Province were organized by a scalper to line up outside the store on Huaihai Road M. last night. They each wore a red hat and was given 150 yuan for waiting for the whole night.
The Apple Store in Beijing's Sanlitun area closed for business today after clashes among gangs of scalpers last night.
