11 dead, 16 injured after workshop blast in Wenzhou
AN explosion rocked a family-owned workshop in east China's Zhejiang Province yesterday afternoon, killing 11 people and injuring 16, local authorities said.
The accident happened in a village in Wenzhou city's Ouhai district about 4:50pm and a fire raged in an area of 200 to 300 square meters after the explosion, rescuers said.
Among the 27 people found by rescuers, 11 died, six are heavily injured and 10 are slightly injured, according to the local government of the district.
Rescuers are still digging the ruins although there are no signs of life at the site.
Government of Ouhai district said that the workshop was illegal and was focused on polishing and processing hardware locks.
The explosion happened after the thick dust in the workshop was ignited by the sparks from the polishing machine, government officials said.
