11 punished over lead-poisoned children
ELEVEN government officials in a southwest China county have been punished after 615 children were poisoned by lead leaking from a smelter, the disciplinary supervising authority of Shaanxi Province's Baoji City has announced.
The authority didn't name the officials or specify penalties, but said they were from Fengxiang County Party Committee and government, Changqing Industrial Zone management committee and its environmental authority, People.com.cn reported today.
Lead levels in the poisoned children ranged from 100 milligrams to 400 milligrams per liter, compared with normal levels of between zero and 100 milligrams, according to earlier Xinhua reports.
Dongling Lead and Zinc Smelting Co has been shut down and the local government is relocating residents living within 500 meters of the plant.
