345,000 resettled for water project

CHINA will move 345,000 people in less than two years to make way for a water scheme that draws on southern rivers to supply the relatively dry north.

The relocation for South-North Water Transfer was the biggest China has undertaken since the resettlement of over 1.2 million people for building Three Gorges Dam, the world's biggest hydroelectric project, People's Daily reported today.

"This resettlement will be more intense than that of the Three Gorges Dam Project, because that involved a million migrants over about 10 years, and this resettlement for the South-to-North Water Transfer Project must be completed in two years," Zhang Jiyao, head of the relocation authority, told the newspaper.

The project involves an eastern route to take water from the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and a central route to tap rivers flowing into the Danjiangkou Dam in central China's Hubei Province.

The residents in Danjiangkou area are being moved out because the dam level is being raised to store more water that will go 1,421 kilometers to supply Beijing and Tianjin.

Zhang said the resettlement will ensure no complaint from residents. Every condition will be taken into consideration, he said.

The first batch of 23,000 people was moved in a trial relocation to new homes in Tuanfeng County, Hubei Province, the report said.
