'Alliance Of Interests' blamed for inferno
More needs to be done to build a clean Party and government, that was the most important lesson from the November 15 inferno in Shanghai, the city's Communist Party chief Yu Zhengsheng said yesterday.
"The fire showed that anti-corruption and disciplinary rules among Party members were not strictly followed. It also exposed integrity issues among Party members and government officials," Yu told reporters in Beijing.
The accident was mainly caused by the "alliance of interests" between officials in charge of construction in Jing'an District, Yu said. The fire, which engulfed a 28-story high-rise on Jiaozhou Road, killed 58 residents.
Yu said: "The fire was caused by the fact that the Jing'an District construction department leaders and its affiliate companies had worked as an alliance of interests. The companies paid some bills for the department while in return, officials also granted construction projects to them. Such practices were against the law."
