Beijing keen to revive sport hunting

BEIJING plans to reopen a sprawling hunting field in its northeastern suburbs after it was closed for nearly a decade due to operational losses.

Authorities of Miyun County, where an enclosed hunting field of nearly 400 hectares and a larger, 100-square-kilometer wilderness are located, announced on Thursday that it will get a 20-million-yuan (US$3 million) investment to turn the hunting field into a tourist attraction, Beijing Times reported today.

But some problems need to be solved first. When it first opened in 1994, the hunting field, one of the only two places in the capital, drew a lot of enthusiasts and nature-lovers, but it began to lose customers in 2000 as the operator could not renew its guns due to the government's strict control on firearms. Meanwhile, the games were fast dwindling, a hunting guard, Wang Liang, told Beijing Times.

The field operator is still offering visitors the same guns that were used 10 years ago. The situation is the same as in Beijing's other hunting field in western Fangshan County. Its spokeswoman, surnamed Reng, said they had to go through complicated procedures to obtain new firearms and the number of their guns is strictly limited.
