Bridge collapses in Sichuan, casualties feared
A bridge in Jiangyou City, Sichuan Province, collapsed about 11:50am today and the casualties remain unknown.
Several cars and pedestrians were seen falling into the river during the collapse while the rescue work is still under way, the provincial news portal website reported.
The bridge is an overpass on the Mianyang Highway.
It's reported that the collapse is likely triggered by flooding caused by heavy rains which had lasted for two days in the region.
The old Qingnian Bridge is decades old and was opened for temporary service at time of the accident as the new Qingnian Bridge is currently being renovated.
Rainstorm-triggered floods have also affected about 16,900 people in Ya'an City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, which was shaken by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in April, local authorities said today.
