Car runs amok as patrol clings to engine hood

THE man who drove a Passat wildly through downtown Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province with a police assistant clinging to the engine hood on Saturday has surrendered himself to police.

The driver, surnamed Zhang, a native of neighboring Xuyi County, told police that when the police assistant caught him driving in the wrong direction, he was too scared because he didn't have a driver's license. He accelerated and the car scooped up the police assistant who hung onto the windshield wipers for life.
Zhang drove at a speed of 70km per hour for more than 600 meters and in his flight the car also knocked out a young couple, who both sustained head injuries.

Seeing he had no intention to stop, the police assistant, Zhang Shengqiang, jumped off the car eventually and injured his legs, Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.

Zhang said he tried to stop the car by standing in front of it. But the car drove straight toward him and scooped him up. He had to grab the windshield wipers tightly.

"It's such a horrible scene that we had only seen it in Hong Kong movies," said a witness. "The driver was definitely insane as he ignored the life of the police assistant."

Police located the car immediately and found the owner, who said he lent the car to his friend who claimed to be an experienced driver. Under persuasion of the owner, the driver turned himself in that evening.
