College evacuates students after gas leaked from factory
MORE than 3,000 college students in Hebei Province were evacuated on Sunday night after ammonia leaked from a fruit and vegetable preservation factory, local media reported.
The gas leak happened in Zhengding County Fruit and Vegetable Preservation Factory around 9pm. Since it was close to Shijiazhuang Science and Engineering College, the students smelled pungent odor of ammonia, Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported.
College authorities soon evacuated all the students and sent five of them to a hospital because they felt sick. Medical examination showed they had no problem.
Air quality in the region returned to normal two hours later. Officials said liquid ammonia in a condenser leaked from a valve. The factory, which belongs to Zhengding County Forestry Bureau, has been suspended.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, the paper said.
