Cops punished over shaming prostitute
AN official and a police officer in south China's Guangdong Province have been punished after a picture showing an alleged prostitute in handcuffs sparked public outcry.
The official with Sanzhong Police Office in Dongguan City's Qingxi Town was disqualified from applying for a bonus this year and the officer was suspended from work for one month, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.
They were not named in the report.
Lu Weiqi, Dongguan police's vice director, acknowledged the officers were not perfect but stressed the woman in the picture was not being paraded but instead confirming the site of prostitution during the investigation.
China this week banned the public shaming of criminal suspects by parading them through the streets, which is most often used in periodic government crackdowns on prostitution.
