Dead woman cleared of HFMD

RUSSIAN authorities have confirmed today that the Chinese woman who died on a train heading to Moscow was not suffering from hand-foot-mouth disease, but pneumonia.
The 24-year-old Chinese woman, who died suddenly on a train from Blagoveshchensk to Moscow on Wednesday, was killed by bilateral pneumonia, an acute respiratory viral infection, said the health watchdog for the Kirov Oblast.
The Investigation Committee of the Russian Federal Procuratorate said it is certain of the diagnosis.
An autopsy revealed that the death of the Chinese national occurred as a result of acute respiratory viral infection, pulmonary and cerebral edema. Blood samples have been sent to Moscow for analysis, the Website of the committee reported.
Fifty-one passengers, all Chinese migrant laborers, traveling with the woman were quarantined in a local hospital.
Previous reports said the Chinese were quarantined because doctors suspected that the woman was killed by hand-foot-mouth disease, a disease that has already claimed at least 50 lives in the Chinese mainland this year.
The woman, whose name was not released, was among 101 Chinese workers who were taking the train to the Kaluzhskaya Oblast in Central Russia to work in market gardens.
Following the death, the train stopped at Zuyevka in central Russia's Kirov region where her body was removed from the train and 51 passengers, including her husband and parents, were sent to a local hospital for observation. Some of them had high temperatures, Li Huilai, the Chinese Minister to Russia told Xinhua news agency yesterday.
The Chinese embassy has asked the Russian authority to make proper arrangements for the Chinese workers who were quarantined, said the Minister.
The woman fell ill on April 11, but was not treated immediately. She had not been feeling well after she boarded the train on Wednesday, her parents said.
