Death toll rises to 16 in SW China landslide

DEATH toll has risen to 16 in a mudslide that happened this morning in Zhenxiong County in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local officials said.

About 46 people in 16 households in Zhaojiagou Village are feared buried by the landslide around 8:20am. But the exact number of people buried in the mud is unclear as rescue operation is still going on, according to China News Service.

More than 300 rescuers have rushed to the scene and have dug out 16 bodies, including a family of seven. The injured people have been sent to the hospital but the number wasn't exposed, the report showed.

Xiao Weidong, senior officer with Zhenxiong firefighting brigade, said it was very hard to save the trapped people in the mudslide-hit area, as wide as nearly 200,000 square meters, under such chilly weather and high altitude.

"During our way to the scene, ice was seen everywhere," he added.

Weather forecast showed the county suffered snow on Friday, and would continue to Sunday.
