Doomsday rumor triggers man to hack students in Henan

THE firm belief in the doomsday rumor triggered a 36-year-old rural man in central Henan Province to hack 23 children, according to the initial police investigation.

Min Yongjun, native in Guangshan County, slashed 23 students and an adult in front of the Wanquan Primary School in Chenpeng Village on morning last Friday and was later held. Four suffered severe injuries but no one is in the critical condition, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

Guangshan prosecutors approved his arrest on Sunday for hampering the public safety via dangerous ways, Xinhua said.

He was said to have a history of neurological disorder and suffer epileptic seizure when he wielded the knife to innocent students.

Meanwhile, fifty-two people in Chongqing Municipality and provinces of Hubei, Fujian, Shaanxi and Sichuan have been detained for spreading the doomsday rumor, according to the Shenzhen-based Daily Sunshine.

Most of them are middle-aged women who distributed leaflets promoting the rumor in the public.
