Farmers hurt when balloon explodes in paddy field
THREE farmers in the eastern Jiangsu Province were burned on Saturday when a hydrogen balloon exploded in front of them, Yangtze Evening News reported today.
The three farmers in a village near Liyang City were harvesting paddies in the field when the giant balloon descended in front of them. While they were trying to figure out what it was, the balloon suddenly exploded, leaving burns in their faces.
The newspaper said the balloon had traveled hundreds of kilometers from Wuhan, the capital city of central China's Hubei Province. Police found a banner attached to the balloon and believed it was an advertising balloon for a housing project in Wuhan.
A salesman for the project told the newspaper that they held an inauguration ceremony on October 1 and it was probably one of the balloons set off at the ceremony.
An expert with the company that provides balloon products said a helium or hydrogen balloon will stay aloft until the gas inside leaks away. He thought it was a rare accident. "The person might be smoking when he touched the balloon. Hydrogen can explode when it meets fire," he added.
A lawyer said the real estate company that set off the balloon should be held responsible for the accident.
