Group-sex professor jailed for3 1/2 years

A PROFESSOR in east China's Jiangsu Province who organized swingers' parties with 21 consenting adults was yesterday jailed for 3 1/2 years for group licentiousness.

Ma Yaohai, 53, received the harsh penalty because he did not plead guilty, said Qinghuai District People's Court in the provincial capital of Nanjing, China News Service reported yesterday.

Ma and 21 others last year became the first people charged under a 1997 law.

Ma's attorney, Yao Yong'an, said his client, who was the only one to plead not guilty, planned to appeal, The Associated Press reported.

"It's definitely not a fair case," Yao said." It's not based on the law. We can understand the reason behind it, but we can't accept it."

Three other defendants were acquitted with no penalties because they turned themselves in, Xinhua news agency reported, while the remaining 18 received jail sentences up to 2 1/2 years.

Prosecutors said Ma, a computer science professor at Nanjing University of Technology, organized a swingers' club, where members met online and gathered in private homes or hotels for group sex.

'Ridiculous'

The 14 men and eight women met through the chat room and engaged in group sex from 2007 to 2009. Some of the parties were held in hotels, while others were held at Ma's residence.

Ma said he committed no crime, as his activities involved consenting adults meeting in non-public places.

Ma said the crime of group licentiousness was "ridiculous."

He said he was fired by his university and alienated by family and friends after his case came to light.

He had no fear any more after details of his most private life were paraded in public for months.

The judges said that three or more people having sex at the same time and place faced charges of public prurience.

Ma, considered the main organizer of the party, had to be punished severely for his contempt, they said.

Police officers arrested the 22 people last December in a hotel suite after accessing their Internet chat records.

They were charged with taking part in 18 orgies between 2007 and 2009, mostly in the apartment Ma shared with his mother, who was hard of hearing and demented.
