Hospital rejects family plea to send patient to Beijing
ZHENGZHOU No. 3 People's Hospital in Henan Province refused to transfer a dying patient to Beijing hospitals though it was its misdiagnosis and improper surgery that caused the 48-year-old man's critical condition, Henan Business Daily reported yesterday.
The hospital firmly rejected the transfer request by Mei Zhenbao's family at the suggestions of medical experts despite that Mei's sister had knelt down to beg.
Mei suffered epididymitis in March 2008 and went to the hospital for treatment. But a series of misdiagnosis and operations injured his intestine and bladder, putting him in danger of death.
An authoritative report by the Henan Province Medical Association decided it was a case of medical malpractice and the hospital should bear major responsibility for Mei's condition.
"The hospital's attitude has changed sharply after the report came out. It has paid more than 700,000 yuan (US$105,000) for Mei's medical cost and 1,000 yuan per month to us as daily expense," said Mei's wife Zhang Ailling. "Before that, the hospital said it had nothing to do with it."
Now, Mei has been transferred to the No. 1 People's Hospital affiliated with Zhengzhou University but medical experts there suggested transferring Mei to big hospitals in Beijing. They believed Mei could be saved if he received better treatment in time.
The transfer request was rejected by the No. 3 People's Hospital, claiming local doctors were as good as those in Beijing.
"I can't understand why they rejected our request again and again," Zhang said. "Henan's doctors have done everything they can but it doesn't work. I don't want to watch him die in pain," she said.
Zhang added that she didn't know what tricks the hospital was playing but she would fight for their rights.
