Jailed airline boss accuses Wuhan deputy mayor of graft

THE jailed boss of a bankrupted Chinese private airliner today accused the deputy mayor of central China's Wuhan City of soliciting bribes and using his power to put him behind bars.

The Wuhan city government has yet to respond to the accusation made at a press conference in Beijing.

Lan Shili, the 51-year-old former board director of the Wuhan-based East Star Airline, released six graft accusations against Yuan Shanla, the city's executive deputy mayor, through his niece Lan Jianmin who is an assistant to the president of the airline's mother company.

The statement accused Yuan of soliciting bribes of more than 400,000 yuan (US$62,735) from Lan Shili between 2007 and 2008. Yuan was also accused of having at least two mistresses and of collaborating with local gangs to extend black market loans to Lan Shili. The deputy mayor also allegedly embezzled governmental money to support the gangs.

The jailed boss said it was Yuan who had forged "evidence" to put him behind bars because he had refused some of Yuan's requests.

Lan Jianmin said she had sent the letter to the discipline inspection commission and the public prosecutor's office of Hubei Province in July but had yet to receive any response.

A press official surnamed Zhang from the Wuhan City government told Shanghai Daily that they had heard of the reports but so far had no official response to it.

Lan Shili was sentenced to four years in jail after he was found guilty of tax evasion in mid-2004.
The 57-year-old Yuan Shanla was appointed deputy mayor of Wuhan in 2000 and has been executive deputy mayor since 2005.
