Kidney patients develop Hep C at clinic

At least 30 kidney patients were infected with hepatitis C while being treated at a county dialysis center in Anhui Province, reported China National Radio.

A victim surnamed Chu said he found he had the potentially fatal liver disease after more than 100 blood dialysis treatments in Huoshan County People's Hospital, the report said yesterday.

Chu feared he could have become infected through contaminated equipment at the clinic. He said he called other dialysis patients and found more than 30 victims with the same condition after treatment in the hospital, the report said.

Hepatitis C often has no easily seen symptoms yet can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and cancer.

A doctor surnamed Wang confirmed that patients had been infected with hepatitis after dialysis in the hospital, but did not say how many of 60 kidney patients were affected.

Wang said the center is investigating the case.
