Luxury cruise subsides in Yellow River upon launch
A 17-million-yuan (US$2.68 million) luxury cruise sank into the Yellow River on its launch in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province in northwest China on September 29, the local transport bureau revealed yesterday.
The ship "Jiugang" went down immediately after it was launched from its shipyard due to a mishandling error and was salvaged three days later. No one was hurt in the accident, the Nanfang Daily reported today.
The cruise was commissioned by the local Jiugang Group and was considered a major project for the city. The Lanzhou Transport Bureau was in charge of its construction. It is 32.4 meters long with a top speed of 22km per hour and can carry 80 passengers.
A bureau official surnamed Qiao said the ship was constructed by a Sichuan Province company, but the local media said it was built in the city's suburban Gaolan County.
Qiao said the shipyard should be blamed for the accident because they wrongly calculated the water level that day. But he said the ship would be repaired and launched again one month later.
A Jiugang Group employee surnamed Wan told the newspaper that his company didn't know about the launch and the accident. The group was probably just a title sponsor of the luxury cruise.
