Ma is China’s most generous philanthropist
ALIBABA founder Jack Ma was the most generous philanthropist on China’s mainland last year, according to the 2015 Hurun Philanthropy List.
By donating 14.65 billion yuan (US$2.36 billion) between last April and last month, Ma and his family retained the place they had in the 2014 list with donations of 14.5 billion yuan.
Ma is followed by electronics chain stores owner Tang Lixin, with 315 million yuan, and property tycoon Wang Jianlin and his son Wang Sicong, with 311 million yuan.
The Hurun list ranks the 100 most generous people on China’s mainland, measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalent donations between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015.
In the past 12 months, the top 100 contributed 20.23 billion yuan, down 720 million yuan from last year.
Of the group, 46 are the top 100 richest men on the mainland, including the richest Li Hejun, chairman of the Hanergy Holding Group Ltd, who has assets of US$26 billion. Li ranked No. 36 with donations of 40.7 million, including 20 million to be used on forestation in Gansu Province.
Donations in the education sector were most prominent, especially to their alma mater. Tang gave 300 million yuan to Chongqing University to build a new information building.
Chinese entrepreneurs are increasingly donating to overseas universities. Chinese real estate moguls Pan Shiyi and his wife Zhang Xin donated 94.7 million yuan to Havard and Yale, which put them in 19th place.
Former Premier Zhu Rongji, 86, came in at No. 88 after giving 15.2 million yuan to the Practical Education Foundation, a body he set up in 2013 to improve the education of students from poor families in less developed regions.
