Man arrested over lover's suicide

A pair of lovers in south China's Guangdong Province committed suicide through carbon monoxide poisoning, but the man survived and was arrested for murder, the local Guangzhou Daily reported today.

The man, 47, surnamed Li, fell in love with the 30-year-old victim surnamed He, 12 years ago. Li was already married then and had a daughter. They kept their relationship in secret for 12 years due to pressure from their families.

On March 9, He suggested to Li that they commit suicide together to show their love. Li pretended to agree, he told the police later.

They went to a hotel the next evening with a bag of charcoal for barbeque, closed the door and windows, burned the charcoal and lay on the bed. Li told the police that he didn't believe it would work.

Li woke up at midnight and found the woman was already breathless. He tried to save her with artificial respiration but failed. Then he called the hotel staff and ambulance. Doctors later confirmed the woman had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
