Officials probed over Thai she-male show

A COUNTY government in southwest China's Sichuan Province has launched an investigation after an online post alleged county officials viewed a she-male performance and posed for pictures with them during a business trip to Thailand.

The post has caused public controversy as some regarded the performance as indecent, according to the local news Website www.scnews.org.

Initial investigation by the government confirmed the pictures in the post were taken by county officials.

The county government said it had asked a local college to provide a business administration training program for some of its county officials and some local businessmen in early 2004.

In September, the trainees went to Southeast Asia as part of the program to learn about urban development there.

During the trip, the travel agency arranged a Thai she-male show for the trainees, who took pictures after the show that ended up in the post.

As to another picture in the post in which all the male officials were seen eating dinner without their shirts on, the government said the officials had just finished swimming and didn't have enough time to put on clothes for the dinner.

The trip was paid for by the government.

While the post prompted accusations of corruption, other Netizens suggested it was an overreaction.

"Thai she-male performance is part of the Thai culture, just like giant pandas to China," a Netizen commented on the post.

The county government demanded further investigation and said those found guilty of disciplinary breaches will be punished.
