Organ dealers get jail terms in unprecedented trial

A Beijing court today sentenced seven men to prison terms of up to seven years and eight months for illgeal trade in human organs.

The Haidian District Court drew much public attention as the three separate cases were the first of their kind to be judged by Chinese law.

Liu Qiangsheng, Yang Shihai, Liu Ping and Cai Shaohua admitted their crime of illgeal business and received up to four years in prison in addition to fines up to 100,000 yuan (US$14,584), today's Beijing Evening News reported.

The group of four started the organ trade in Beijing and central Henan Province early last year. They took 150,000 yuan advance payment from a patient surnamed Xie, who was in need of a half liver, and found a seller surnamed Yang, promising him a total payment of 350,000 yuan in April 2009.

However, Yang received only 250,000 yuan after the liver transplant. Yang then threatened to call the police and got beaten up by the group in May.
The dealers were involved in three separate organ transactions.
