Party ousts ex-editor of Xinjiang newspaper

THE former editor-in-chief of Xinjiang Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper for northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has been expelled from the Party and removed from public office for corruption and making improper remarks, according to the Party’s discipline watchdog.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said yesterday in a note on its website that Zhao Xinwei, 58, was guilty of serious violations of discipline, which usually means corruption.
It also accused Zhao of failing to toe the Party line on the fight against separatism, terrorism and religion extremism in Xinjiang.
Zhao “openly made statements opposing central government and autonomous region work instructions on major issues,” the anti-graft commission said, adding that he deliberately “violated official decisions on media coverage in the region.
The commission stated that Zhao had misappropriated and squandered public assets, and accepted bribes by using his status to seeking profits for others.
As a Party member, Zhao lost his ideals and beliefs, and his actions severely violated Party discipline, the commission said.
Despite the Party launching a campaign to crack down on graft, Zhao failed to mend his ways, it said.
The Party last month approved new punishments that mean any Party member who makes critical comments about state policy, defames the nation, state leaders or the Party, faces expulsion.
Zhao had already been formally arrested. He will now face prosecution.
