Police: man's years in mental hospital 'justified'
POLICE in central China's Hubei Province defended their 14-year detention of a whistleblower in a mental hospital as "legal and justified," saying the man suffered from paranoia following his failed marriage.
A spokesperson surnamed Yu with Zhuxi County said they wouldn't even think about compensation request by the family of Guo Yuanrong, 49, a former county official who was subjected to treatment for his alleged mental disease in 1996, Yunnan Information Times reported today.
Yu said they sent Guo to the mental hospital for compulsory treatment as he acted perversely by writing letters repeatedly to accuse some of his superiors and colleagues from 1994.
Guo was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia by a district hospital in 1996. Yu said "Guo's sickness was hard to cure and certainly posed a threat to society," Yu added.
In response, Guo said he didn't care about what government said anymore when interviewed by Yunan Information Times on Tuesday, the first day of his release from the hospital.
"I'll never think of protesting against the authority. If they say you are insane, then you are," Guo said, adding that he bears no hatred toward anyone.
