Police probe hanging in custody

A SUSPECTED thief who allegedly hanged himself in a southwestern China police station had injuries on his ribs, back and neck, prosecutors revealed today.

Doctors performed an autopsy this morning on the body of Xing Kun, Kunming-based Chuncheng Evening News reported today. Police from Wuhua District Public Security Bureau have denied accusations of brutality and say they will release more details later.

He was found dead in an interrogation room at Xiaonan police station at 7:47am on Saturday, said Hou Xiaobing, deputy director of the district PSB. Xing was put into the room at 4am, Hou said.

According to photos provided by Xing's family, injuries could be clearly identified on his ribs, back and neck.

Kunming police declined to comment on Xing's death but said they were also under investigation.

They initially explained that Xing had hanged himself with a shoelace in a blind spot in the interrogation room that wasn't covered by a surveillance camera, but refused to show Xing's family the videotape.
