Principal suspect of Mekong River attack sentenced to death
Naw Kham, the principal suspect in the murders of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River last year, was sentenced to death this afternoon by the Kunming City Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan Province.
Other three among his five fellows also received death penalty, according to China Central Television Station.
Naw Kham, a notorious drug lord nicknamed the "Godfather" in the region, attacked, hijacked and finally murdered 13 Chinese sailors on two cargo ships, the Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8, on October 5 in 2011 on the Mekong River.
He denied plotting the attack when he appeared on trial in Kunming on September 20. However, the five other defendants all testified that he was the gang's ringleader and mastermind behind the attack.
All the six had been charged with murder, drug trafficking, kidnapping and hijacking.
