A SENIOR manager with a railway signal com-pany involved in the fatal Wenzhou train collision a month ago has died from a heart attack after being overwhelmed by pressures following the crash, according to someone who knew him.
Ma Cheng, the general manager of China Railway Signal & Communication Corp, was involved in rail industry safety checks. The death of the 55-year-old during such a check in Shenzhen was announced yesterday in an obituary on the company's website.
A person familiar with Ma said the manager was overwhelmed by the burden and pressure resulting from the crash that killed 40 people on July 23. His company is under scrutiny because an affiliate designed signal software for that section of rail.
The affiliate apologized to the public and the victims after the train accident, saying it would conduct thorough checks on all products used in the Chinese rail system.
Preliminary investigations into the crash discovered serious design flaws in signaling equipment as well as a poor emergency response and safety management loopholes, according to a work safety official.
Detailed conclusions are expected to be released next month.
Ma's company has provided signal equipment to high-speed railway lines like the -Shanghai-Beijing and Wuhan-Guangzhou routes. Its products are also used on Shanghai's subways and Maglev, according to the company website.
Signaling systems are among the key railway components the government has said must be checked thoroughly nationwide.
