Sanya seafood restaurants rip off tourists
OFFICIALS in the tourist city of Sanya in southern Hainan Province said they didn't receive any visitor complaints during the Spring Festival despite online allegations that local seafood restaurants overcharged tourists.
A Weibo microblogger named Luo said one of his friends went to a recommended seafood restaurant during his recent trip to Sanya and was charged nearly 4,000 yuan (US$630) for three common dishes.
A man sitting next to his friend was even threatened by four tough guys into ordering a 6,000-yuan fish dish, Luo tweeted on Saturday and his post was retweeted more than 40,000 times.
Many netizens expressed disappointment for their Hainan trips, especially in the cities of Haikou and Sanya, saying they felt cheated as the island province was touted as a paradise for tourists.
"The conduct of those seafood restaurants near tourist resorts is tantamount to daylight robbery!" one netizen wrote.
The Fulin Seafood Restaurant as exposed in Luo's microblog has been closed for investigation. But the Sanya Government Information Office reiterated that the city's tourism industry remained in good order.
