Toddler rides bike on highway before saved by police

POLICE rescued a toddler yesterday when he was riding a three-wheel mini bike on a busy highway in Chongqing, southwest China.

The three-year-old boy Wei Wei had pedaled on the highway from Chongqing to Yibin in neighboring Sichuan Province for about 1 kilometer when he was spotted by traffic police, Chongqing Evening News reported today.

The boy said he didn't know how he got to the highway. He "only followed others."

Wei Wei's grandma said he was riding the bike around their block about 3 kilometers away from the highway. She suddenly recalled she forgot to turn off cooking gas and hurried home before telling the boy to stay where he was.

When she returned 10 minutes later, the boy was gone. A neighbor said he saw the boy and another girl pedaling their bikes toward a supermarket about 2 kilometers away. When Wei Wei's family rushed there, they saw a police car carrying their boy.

Police said a surveillance camera caught him riding precariously next to speeding vehicles. They immediately sent three cars to get him. But the cameras didn't record how the toddler rode onto the highway through the toll gate. He might have followed someone sneaking through a hole in the partition fence, a policeman was quoted as saying.
