Traffic police assistants sacked after street brawl
TWO traffic police assistants in northern China's Tangshan city have been sacked after a video showing the duo in a street brawl created an instant stir online today.
The 64-second video, labeled "Two Tangshan traffic policewomen fight each other right in the middle of the street," spread on the Internet after being posted online about 8:51am today. It had been reviewed, commented on and retweeted on China's major video and social-networking websites by tens of thousands before noon.
The Tangshan police later announced the two women in the fight were not traffic police officers but instead assistants hired to help police direct traffic.
In mainland cities, traffic police assistants are common given the rampant traffic violations, busy streets and a shortage of police officers.
The road police assistants wear uniforms that are different from those for police officers.
The city police said the incident took place about 9am on July 8. The pair had a dispute, which escalated to a street brawl.
Many netizens condemned the women for being irresponsible because they were both on duty and needed for traffic responsibilities during rush hour.
The local police said today both of them were sacked the day after the fight.
