US 'Female Zorro' stops local from committing suicide in West Lake
AN American female saved a local woman who attempted to commit suicide in West Lake yesterday afternoon.
"She was like a female Zorro!" said a retired man, surnamed Wang, who witnessed the rescue and managed to capture it on camera.
At around 4:40pm yesterday Wang, who was on his daily afternoon stroll, took shelter from the rain under a pavilion near West Lake Xintiandi.
As he took in the beautiful scene of mist on the lake, he suddenly saw someone's hair sticking out from the water, about 20 meters from the bank.
Wang walked over to have a better look and saw two foreigners, a man and a woman in their 30s, approaching the lake. While rushing to the lake, the foreign woman took off her coat and with only a vest left jumped into West Lake.
She swam to the person, a Chinese woman in her 30s, grabbed her clothes and swam back to the bank quickly.
Wang pulled both women onto the bank with the help of the foreign man and a security guard nearby.
Some passersby with English skills told Wang that the foreigners were from the United States.
The foreign woman put on her overcoat, went over to the saved woman and said goodbye. The saved woman thanked them with a low voice, only saying she was from Fuyang City and surnamed Xia.
"From finding the person in water to bringing her back safely to the bank and saying goodbye took less than 10 minutes. If I were able to speak English, I would definitely have made friends with her," said Wang.
Xia, the Chinese woman, told police that she had tried to commit suicide because of the many hardships she faced in her family life and work. She left the police station under the care of her family about one hour later.
