Villagers suspect their leader was murdered

VILLAGERS in east China's Zhejiang Province are demanding investigation into the death of their village leader who was killed in a hit-and-run accident after accusing local officials of land abuse.

Police in the city of Wenzhou said Qian Yunhui, 53, died after a truck ran over him at 9:25am on Saturday. A notice on the police website said it was "a common accident" and the driver had been detained.

However, the police statement triggered outrage among the villagers, who claimed Qian was murdered by officials in revenge for his land-abuse accusations, Beijing-based China Youth Daily reported today.

Speculations went wild on several nationwide online forums including Tianya.cn, saying Qian received a phone call, asking him to go to the road. When he arrived, five men threw Qian onto the road and a truck driving fast on the wrong way crushed him. The five men fled before police came.

The villagers said their phones had been bugged by local authorities ordering them to shut up since the accident.
