Xi Jinping was elected Chinese president this morning at the ongoing session of the 12th National People's Congress, China's top legislature.
Xi was also elected chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China at the same meeting.
The election result was announced after a vote of deputies to the national legislature.
Xi, born in 1953, is also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
