Building Shanghai’s future with Veolia’s ecological commitment
IT is a great honor, as CEO of Veolia, to participate in the International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council (IBLAC). I look forward to exploring with all parties the theme of “Openness, Innovation, Inclusiveness — Shanghai’s Development Strategy Towards 2030,” a topic that resonates perfectly with Veolia`s GreenUp Strategic program, demonstrating Veolia’s commitment to driving ecological transformation.
As a global leader in environmental services, with over 170 years of expertise worldwide and 30 years in China, Veolia has actively participated in the country’s remarkable green transition. Today, operating in more than 40 cities through over 450 projects and backed by approximately 8,000 dedicated employees, we are at the forefront of driving sustainable development across China. Our commitment to supporting Shanghai’s ambitious green development strategy aligns seamlessly with our core principles, inspiring a brighter, sustainable future for all.
Openness embodies Shanghai’s commitment to engaging with the world and reflects Veolia’s aspiration to establish a deep-rooted presence in China. In 2002, we partnered with Shanghai Chengtou Group to establish Shanghai Pudong Veolia Water Co., Ltd., a groundbreaking moment as it marked the first time a foreign enterprise participated in municipal water supply services in China. This partnership marked the beginning of our remarkable journey in Shanghai, leading us to expand into municipal waste projects and energy management contracts. Today, our China regional headquarters is based in Pudong, where we operate five water treatment plants, delivering approximately 2 million cubic meters of high-quality water daily to around 4.3 million residents. Furthermore, our advanced R&D center for water technologies in Zhangjiang Hitech Zone of Shanghai, stands as a powerful testament to the strength of open cooperation.
We advocate for even broader collaborative participation, co-creating solutions with local stakeholders—including government agencies, domestic enterprises, and academic institutions. By harnessing global expertise while honoring local specificities, we can help to propel Shanghai toward a greener, healthier urban environment.
Innovation drives the ecological transformation we aspire to achieve together, uniting Veolia and Shanghai in a shared vision. We stand at the forefront of developing sustainable solutions that optimize resource management, reduce carbon footprint, and minimize environmental impact. Currently, we are engaged in comprehensive discussions with Shanghai regarding green energy cooperation, particularly exploring biomethane solutions to support the green transportation initiatives of Shanghai Port—the world’s largest port by cargo volume.
I have always believed that “digitalization + low-carbon technology” is crucial to addressing ecological challenges. In Pudong, our smart water management platform enables comprehensive supervision from raw water to tap, significantly enhancing pipeline and production efficiency. This initiative perfectly aligns Veolia’s GreenUp strategic program with Shanghai’s development as an artificial intelligence hub. Shanghai’s inclusiveness empowers all stakeholders to make meaningful contributions to the green transition.
At this pivotal moment, I am resolutely committed to reaffirming Veolia’s dedication to China and Shanghai. As a global leader in ecological transformation, Veolia is poised to harness its vast expertise — rooted in over 170 years of global experience and 30 years of profound local insight in China — to join hands with Shanghai in forging a sustainable future together.
