City wants deeper Microsoft ties

SHANGHAI authorities told Microsoft’s visiting president yesterday that they can deepen cooperation in digital transformation, focusing on key areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and smart cities.

Chen Jining, Shanghai’s Party Secretary, made the remarks while meeting Microsoft President and Vice Chair Brad Smith, the government said.

Chen pointed out that Microsoft is a leading global technology company. With the deepening of Shanghai’s urban digital, intelligent, and green transformation, the space for the two sides to deepen cooperation will be even broader.

He welcomed Microsoft to leverage its own advantages, optimize its R&D and innovation layout in Shanghai, bring more digital technologies and innovative businesses to the city, promote the better use of AI technology to empower enterprise transformation and upgrading, jointly research governance frameworks and standards, and help build an open and innovative ecosystem.

Shanghai was also open to Microsoft collaborating on studying technology-related governance frameworks and standards.

Smith said that Microsoft is confident in China’s future and its commitment to China’s development will not change.

The company will continue to increase its R&D investment, deepen practical cooperation with Chinese partners, and better grasp the trends of digitalization, AI, and greening.

Microsoft will use AI technology to better empower basic research, industrial upgrading, and urban green and low-carbon transformation, and work together to create a better future.

The two sides agreed to continue to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as AI and smart cities and work together to promote the development of Shanghai’s digital economy and the construction of a modern international metropolis.
