Xi sends good wishes to Wuzhen Net conference
President Xi Jinping yesterday extended congratulations via video to the World Internet Conference, which opened in Wuzhen, east China’s Zhejiang Province, on Tuesday.
Noting that a new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation is rapidly advancing, Xi urged efforts to embrace the digital, Internet-based and smart development trends.
He called for accelerating innovative, safe and inclusive growth in cyberspace, and jointly striving for a brighter “digital future.”
China is willing to work with countries around the world to take historical initiatives in information revolution, and jointly build a community with a shared future in cyberspace, to make the Internet better benefit the people and the world, the president said.
During yesterday’s opening ceremony, a distinguished contribution award was presented to recognize individuals and enterprises who have made outstanding contributions to the global internet landscape.
Under the WIC framework, the summit will also see the establishment of a special committee on artificial intelligence, the launch of a think tank cooperation program, and the creation of a global digital training institute.
Top executives of Chinese tech firms, including 360, Alibaba and Xiaomi, shared their vision on how to better use and regulate AI.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s chairman and chief executive, said AI has been adopted in all business sectors of the company, from smartphone, Internet of Things devices and the new electric vehicles. Currently, Xiaomi ranks No. 3 in the global smartphone market, with customers in over 100 countries and regions.
However, Lei also acknowledged the dual-edged nature of AI, emphasizing the need for robust cybersecurity governance and international cooperation to mitigate potential risks, he told the opening ceremony.
Today, the biggest “variable force” in the Internet is AI, which brings more connections and changes to various industries, creating a more intelligent society, Eddie Wu, Alibaba’s chief executive, told a WIC forum yesterday.
The top-level WIC forum, themed “Embracing a People-Centered and AI-For-Good Digital Future,” brought together industry regulators, business leaders, government officials, and experts to discuss the digital world future.
Large language models will reshape almost all industries today. Vertical and customized LLMs are more suited to China’s development, as they require less AI capabilities and are relatively more secure, said Zhou Hongyi, founder of 360, China’s biggest online security firm.
Zhou also warned of risks and security problems of AI.
The WIC closes tomorrow.
