US 鈥榚conomic aggression鈥 by tariffs

The United States is literally launching economic aggression by increasing tariffs and messing with Chinese companies, a Syrian politician and diplomat told Xinhua in an interview.
Mahdi Dakhlallah, member in the central leadership of Syria鈥檚 al-Baath Party, said that the US trade policy comes as 鈥渁n aggression on norms of the international trade system鈥 during a time when amazing economic development is taking place in China.
The politician, who served as Syria鈥檚 information minister from 2004 to 2006 and ambassador to Saudi Arabia in 2009, said that the Chinese role in the international trade arena is increasingly important, which makes the United States feel that it is no longer playing a leading role in global trade, so it began 鈥渃arrying out economic aggression and revenge.鈥
He noted that the US-China economic relations are entwined and any trade war would hold losses for both sides, but 鈥渢he side which carries the aggression will suffer the biggest loss.鈥
鈥淚f the US imposed additional tariffs on cheap Chinese goods, the price of such goods would increase in the US market and thus would weaken the livelihood of the middle and poor classes,鈥 he said.
The politician also said the US 鈥渢rade protectionism鈥 shall be 鈥渘o longer acceptable in the world because it runs against the interests of other countries including US allies,鈥 and those countries would take countermeasures on US goods, which eventually affects US exports.
Regarding the US move to impose sanctions on Chinese tech company Huawei, Dakhlallah pointed out that the United States is annoyed by China鈥檚 development in the communication and information technology field, particularly in the 5G area.
鈥淭he US accusation that China steals intellectual property is unfounded and merely an allegation,鈥 he said, noting that any US court could file complaints according to existing laws instead of politicizing the sanctions against Chinese companies.
In the eyes of Dakhlallah, China is a creative country and seeks for peaceful development. 鈥淚t started to show the creativity of the Chinese people and doesn鈥檛 have aggressive intentions against other countries,鈥 he said.
鈥淭he most important standard in international law is equal sovereignty,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat is, each country has sovereignty equal to that of the other.鈥
