Government leads by example on 3G stations - what's next?

THE Shanghai government has set a good example by offering to build 3G (third generation) base stations on the tops of government office buildings in a move to promote their construction.

Shanghai plans to build 3,000 3G base stations this year to form a 3G network covering the whole city to ensure high-quality telecommunications during the World Expo next year.

However, the country's mobile operators are having great difficulty in finding sites, the Oriental Morning Post reported on Monday.

One major reason is that many citizens, worried about possible radiation, object to the construction of base stations near their neighborhoods.

In view of this, relevant departments of the city government made a further evaluation of the radiation of 3G base stations this April and found that the amount of radiation had very little negative impact on human beings.

To dispel citizens' doubts, the city government decided to choose some government office buildings as the sites for 3G base stations.

Last Saturday, the first station was set up at the top of the office building of the municipal committee of the Communist Party of China.

Leading by example is better than mere rhetoric, and cadres can do a lot in this aspect. For example, always go to work by bus or subway, and always turn off the air conditioners after work.
