No joke for comedian
LIAONING, in northeast China, never wavers in asserting the value of art, proclaimed the Liaoning Daily on its front page recently. At almost the same time, Liaoning Television ended its long-term collaboration with entertainment veteran Zhao Benshan.
Zhao, a Liaoning native, is a household name in China for his skits on China Central Television, many of which have been criticized for being in poor taste. He is also a successful entrepreneur who runs many lucrative businesses and owns a US$30 million private jet. But Zhao was notably absent from the Communist Party Central Committee’s important arts conference in Beijing. He was also omitted from the guest lists for arts conferences for Liaoning Province and his hometown Tieling City.
Liaoning Television was once nicknamed “Benshan TV” as there was almost nothing aired but drama shows produced by Zhao. Liaoning’s media may now diversify their art and entertainment in future. A monopoly is never a good thing, especially if it involves people like Zhao.
