Principals get F for closing 13 schools for wedding

SELDOM has a wedding ceremony created so much confusion and outcry.

This was the wedding of the son of a school headmaster in Shaanxi Province.

On December 28, 13 middle and primary schools in Guanjia Township suspended classes for one day, freeing all teachers to attend the wedding ceremony of the son of Wu Fengzhou, the headmaster of a key local school.

As a result, over 2,800 students in the 13 schools had no classes that day, China Business View reported on January 4.

This is a typical case that reflects the prevailing worship of officials in the education system.

Given Wu's status, it is likely that many teachers dared not to be absent from his son's wedding ceremony.

Yet even if all the teachers willingly attended the wedding, that's no reason to neglect the interests of 2,800 students.

True, all the 13 schools are reportedly to have arranged a make up day for the lost class time, but schools are not entitled to suspend or change classes to suit some whim, without approval of the local education bureau.

In fact, Wu could have arranged the wedding ceremony on a weekend so that all the teachers could attend the ceremony without missing class.

All the headmasters involved have either apologized or been suspended from their posts. Wu Fengzhou has reportedly been sacked.
