Quality not quantity matters
CHINA has clearly become the world's second-largest economy, but it's far from a giant in terms of product quality. Chinese enterprises largely remain a base for export processing. They have yet to acquire the core technology for most exported products.
Even in the domestic market, low product quality has become a glaring problem. Scandals in food production have occasionally gripped the nation. If not addressed in a proper and timely manner, quality problems will hurt consumer confidence, which in turn will hurt our economic and social progress.
China should reform its performance review system for local officials so that they are judged more on the quality rather than the quantity of their local economies.
